Review: Kilrock Descaler – Limescale Remover
Quick Review: Kilrockdescaler is one of those rare products that ‘Does exactly what it says on the tin’. It very quickly and effectively removes limescale from kettles, shower heads, irons and loads of other items that accumulate limescale.
I live on the south coast of the UK, and the mains water supply is very hard. Limescale quickly accumulates on anything that involves water. Limescale build-up can cause things like kettles, irons etc, to work inefficiently or even break. I’ve tried a number of different limescale removers in the past, but nothing comes close to Kilrock descaler
The Problem With Most Descalers
Before I discovered Kilrock descaler, I spent unnecessary time trying to remove limescale from various items around the house. The problem I found with other descaler products and the alternative ‘green’ methods of removing limescale was that they weren’t very effective at removing limescale that had built up.
Cleaning a shower door, which only accumulates a thin layer of limescale, was fairly easy. But cleaning a kettle, which can quickly build up a thick layer of limescale, was much more challenging.
Kilrock Descaler Pros
- It Works – Unlike so many products that promise the world but deliver very little, Kilrock actually delivers.
- No Elbow Grease Required – Simply pour some Kilrock on the area that you want to descale and just leave it to fizz away. There’s no need to wipe or scrub.
- Descales Fast – For most situations, Kilrock will get rid of the limescale within a couple of minutes. If limescale has really built up, then it might take up to 10 minutes.
Kilrock Descaler Cons
- Smells – Kilrock has a strong chemical pong to it, especially when used with hot water. Fortunately, the smell doesn’t linger, dissipating very quickly.
- Runs Out Quickly – The 400ml bottle only has four or five doses, which I find soon goes. I’d recommend getting two bottles or a large 1 litre bottle
- Can Cause Burns – It is best to wear some rubber gloves when using kilrock descaler. I’ve accidentally got it on my hands on many occasions and it hasn’t caused any burns, so I don’t think it is particularly caustic.
What Can You Use Kilrock Descaler On
I use Kilrock descaler on loads of things:
- Kettle
- Iron
- Toilet
- Shower Head
- Taps
- Shower Door
- Sink
……….basically, anywhere that there’s limescale gets the Kilrock treatment.
I’ve used it on all types of surfaces, metal, plastic, and tiles and never had it cause any problems. However, I’d recommend reading the instructions before use to check if there are any surfaces that it shouldn’t be used on.
Tips When Using Kilrock Descaler
- Kilrock descaler works much better when used with hot water. For example, when descaling your kettle, boil the water first and then add the kilrock.
- To clean surfaces like a shower door, add some Kilrock to a bucket of warm water and use a scouring pad to apply the solution, leave for a few minutes and then rinse.
- The Kilrock chemical smell is especially strong when using Kilrock with steaming water, so make sure to open windows first.
- When descaling a kettle, put it in the sink first, as the chemical reaction can be quite aggressive and cause water to overflow.
Descaling A Kettle With Kilrock
Conclusion: Kilrock Descaler Review
I’ve been using Kilrock general purpose descaler for many years and it works really well. The main negative I find is the smell can be quite overpowering when it’s used with boiling water.
Kilrock do have a spray and gel version of their descaler, but I’ve found the original general purpose descaler is best.
If you live in a hard water area and have a limescale problem then get yourself some Kilrock descaler, you won’t regret it!
