I’ve been using Black & White hair pomade pretty much daily since I was a kid. Over the 30+ years of use, I have learnt how to get the best out of Black and White.
Buy The Big Black And White Tub
In the UK, Black and White is available in a 50ml tub and a 200ml tub. I always get the larger tub as it offers much better value for money than buying the small tubs.
One large 200ml tub of Black and White will last me a year (using it daily) and it costs under £10!
Difference between Black & White Lite Formula and Black & White Original
Black and White Hair Pomade (Original):
- Heavy texture provides a stronghold, ideal for styles that require more grip and longer-lasting hold.
- Has a moderate shine
- Better suited for hair that requires more control.
Black & White Lite Formula Hair Pomade:
- As the name suggests, the Lite Formula has a lighter texture. It offers a lighter hold compared to the original formula, making it suitable for hairstyles that need flexibility and less stiffness
- Has a higher shine in comparison to the B&W Original
- The Lite Formula is easier to work through the hair and comb
- Lite Formula is easier to wash out than the B&W Original
The main difference lies in the hold and weight of the product, with the original formula being heavier and offering a stronger hold, and the Lite Formula being lighter and more flexible.
Applying Black & White To Hair
Below are the steps that I have found work best for me when applying Black & White to my hair. The application tips below are for the Black & White Original, not the Black & White Lite Formula
Start Small
Only a surprisingly small amount of Black & White is required to give hair a good hold. The amount required does vary, for example, after washing hair less is required and obviously the longer your hair the more B&W is required.
It is best to start by putting less B&W in your hair than you think and adding more if required.
Works Best When Warmed Up
At room temperature, Black & White has a texture similar to soft set honey. When it’s like this it is quite difficult to apply to hair.
With a finger take a small amount of Black & White and rub it between your fingers. The heat generated from the friction will soften the Black & White and make it much easier to apply.
Apply To Damp Hair
I find that Black & White works best when it’s applied to damp hair. I usually apply it in the morning after showering. I think because my hair is usually warm after a shower the black & White applies more easily.
Apply To Hair Roots And Work Up
Once the Black and White has been warmed up, apply it to your hair roots and slowly work up to the tips of the hair. Getting most of the Black & White at the hair roots will give the best hold. If There’s too much B&W on the tips of the hair it will be heavy and just flop.
Apply Vigorously
I find that Black & White isn’t something that is gently worked into hair, it has to be applied quite aggressively. This is because it is quite thick and you won’t get a nice even thin spread if you gently apply it.
Washing Hair
Washing Black & White out of hair can be quite difficult, especially if it has built up over a few days.
The best method is to first rinse hair in warm water (the warmer the better) for a few minutes, this softens the Black & White. Then use a standard shampoo to wash hair as normal.
Shampoos that are ‘gentle’ on your hair and shampoos that have conditioner in, will (in my experience) require a couple of washes to completely remove the Black & White.
Conclusion: Tips On Using Black & White Hair Pomade
Black and White Hair Pomade when used correctly can give excellent hair control. The most common mistakes that people make using B&W are not warming it up and not applying it to the hair roots and working out to the tips.
